Medical Tests for Premature Babies

Most premature babies will have a number of tests in the hospital to rule out or provide early detection of certain medical problems. Common tests include:

Blood tests - taken from the baby's veins or heel. The test may result in bruising that will resolve in a few days. In addition tiny scars may occur but they do not affect the growth of the hand or foot

Chest X-ray - to check breathing and lungs

ECG and ECHO - to check the heart

Head ultrasound - to check the brain and surrounding areas

Hearing test - to check hearing and development

Eye test - to check sight
