Calming a Crying Baby
Make sure your baby isn't hungry or doesn't need a nappy change.
Place your baby so that he can see you.
Talk softly to him.
Bring his hand to his mouth, or give him a pacifier.
Hold your baby's arms close to his chest.
Wrap the baby in a baby blanket. The shoulders should be forward and the body wrapped gently, but firmly, in a soft cotton baby blanket. Leave the hands free to get to his mouth.
Pick him up.
Motion usually helps, so try rhythmic patting or rocking with the baby in your arms.
Try not to entertain the baby. Be calm instead.
Give your baby a warm bath (unless he dislikes water).
Take him for a walk in the stroller, or for a ride in the car.
When all else fails, put him down and let him cry it out. This is sometimes just what is needed to calm a crying baby.
Never shake your baby or try to make him stop crying. Shaking your baby can result in brain damage, or even death.
